14th Cyprus Wine Competition 2023

The 14th Cyprus Wine Competition was organized again this year from the 22nd until the 26th of May, by the Department of Agriculture, under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, Mr. Petros Xenophontos, as well as the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV).

The jury of the competition consisted of seven members and was coordinated by Prof. Antonio Morata, who has been designated by the OIV as President of the Commission and supervisor of the procedures for conducting the competition.

Twenty-nine Cypriot wineries participated in this year’s competition and submitted 163 wine samples in two categories (dry, semi-dry, semi-sweet, and sweet wines), while 30% of the entries from each category received a prize. Therefore, in the first category, three wines received a grand gold medal (ranging score: 92-100 points), 41 wines received a gold medal (ranging score 85-91 points) and two wines received a silver medal (ranging score: 82-84 points). In the category of sweet wines, four wines have received a grand gold medal.

In addition, five special distinctions were awarded for the wines produced exclusively from the indigenous varieties of Cyprus: “Yiannoudi,” “Maratheftiko”, “Ofthalmo”, “Spourtiko” and “Xynisteri”.

Vlassides Winery was honored with 1 Grand Gold Medal, 3 Gold Medals, and 1 Special Distinction.

In particular, ΟROMAN 2020 wine received a Grand Gold Medal, obtaining the highest score among all the samples that participated in the category of dry, semi-dry & semi-sweet wines. Gold medals were awarded to the wines ARTION 2018, SAUVIGNON BLANC VLASSIDES 2022, and CABERNET SAUVIGNON VLASSIDES 2020. ΟROMAN also received a special distinction for the wine from the Cypriot variety Yiannoudi, with the highest score.
